Abstract

Gender remains a hot topic for discussion and research. The Gender Inequality Index (IKG) in Indonesia is still fluctuating, as is the IKG in Riau, which, in recent years, has demanded Government attention. Unequal gender can lead to the hegemony of masculinity, where practices of being an 'ideal' man are perpetuated to maintain the integrity of the hierarchy. This research examines the hegemony of masculinity in Riau's folktales and how it relates to Riau's masculinity issues in the current era. Using a qualitative method and R. W. Connell's concept of hegemonic masculinity, four characteristics of hegemonic masculinity are found in these folktales. The first characteristic is anti-feminine, which shows strength. Second, masculine images should be maintained to show masculinity. Third, have a respectable aura to show courage. Fourth, have high self-esteem to show power. This research concludes with the facts about the masculinity issue in Riau, which has not yet disappeared.
