Abstract

The researcher analyzed the behavior of the main character in the film "A Man Called Otto". The film addressed contemporary issues, that is the tendency for people to end their lives by suicide when they are dealing with personal issues like love and lack of support. The primary objectives were to: (1) comprehend Otto's personality structures; and (2), using Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory of personality, determine Otto's defense mechanisms. The researchers used qualitative research using a descriptive methodology. Data collection techniques included watching the film, reading the script, and taking notes. The analysis focused on Otto's personality structures (id, ego and superego) and the defense mechanisms used to overcome internal conflicts. The results indicated that Otto's personality had been dominated by the id, leading to an imbalance. Otto used defense mechanisms such as denial, projection, and sublimation, with a predominance of sublimation.
