Abstract

Podcasting has become a popular contemporary medium of communication that is increasingly prevalent across various spheres of public discourse. The flexibility of its form and topics has made podcasts a new platform for the emergence of diverse linguistic phenomena, including bilingualism. This study aims to analysis the forms, functions, and social meanings of code-switching and code-mixing that occur in the Growth Mindset podcast featuring Putri Tanjung and Anies Baswedan. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing the theories of Poplack, Suwito, and Gumperz as the analytical framework. Data were collected through non-participatory observation and documentation, and then analyzed using a matching method. The data were described and classified based on the categories of code-switching and code-mixing, as well as their accompanying social functions and meanings. The findings reveal that code-mixing is more dominant than code-switching. The most frequent type is outer code-mixing, characterized by the insertion of English elements into Indonesian sentence structures. The social functions of bilingual use include affective expression, emphasis of meaning, and the construction of a modern and communicative self-image. The use of English also serves as a strategy for speakers to express emotions, assert professionalism, and demonstrate familiarity with interlocutors. From a social perspective, the bilingual phenomena in this podcast reflect the speakers' educational backgrounds and professional environments, which are globally oriented, thereby reinforcing their identities as modern public figures in the digital era.
