Abstract

The Tomb of Inyiak Dualiah Labai Tungka and the Tampaik Surau in Nagari Tandikek Utara hold an important place in the community’s religious and social life. Using a qualitative approach through interviews with local figures, this study examines the existence of the tomb and the social-religious functions of the surau. The findings show that the tomb is not only the resting place of a religious leader but also a spiritual center believed to possess karomah (divine grace). This belief encourages people to visit the site as an act of respect and a means to seek blessings. The tomb’s presence reinforces inherited religious values and strengthens communal bonds. Initially functioning as a place for worship and religious learning, the Tampaik Surau has gradually adapted to social changes. From a functionalist perspective, it helps preserve religious traditions, maintain collective identity, and foster close social relations. Applying Mircea Eliade’s concept of The Sacred and the Profane, the study shows that the tomb serves as a sacred space with deep religious meaning. Despite social changes, the surau and the tomb continue to embody historical, cultural, and spiritual values that shape the social and religious system of Nagari Tandikek Utara.
