Abstract

Language has been impacted by the rapid growth of digital technology, which has affected many facets of human life. One example is the increasing popularity of interactive language learning apps such as Duolingo. In this study, we investigate the arabization process in Duolingo through the lens of generative phonology, with a particular emphasis on how foreign languages transform into Arabic. We used a descriptive qualitative method involving documentation and literature review. Results show that arabization consists of several systematic phonological processes, including replacing foreign phonemes with Arabic ones, simplifying consonant clusters, and adding vowels to ease pronounciation. Generative phonological consistent rules govern these sound transformations.
